Fed Meeting Set to Hinge on Middle East Tensions and AI-Driven Inflation
The Federal Reserve's policy meeting kicks off tomorrow, July 28, 2026, with officials facing mounting price pressures that could make the interest rate decision a close and divisive one.
Renewed tensions in the Middle East have sent oil prices soaring again, overshadowing a tamer-than-expected reading on June consumer prices. A demand boom fuelled by artificial intelligence and the Trump administration's announcements of new tariffs have added to concerns over persistent inflationary pressures.
The odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike at this week's policy meeting are close to 40 per cent, with investors boosting their bets in recent days. Bloomberg quoted Alex Payne, a senior portfolio manager at Vanguard, saying 'Things are definitely heating up in the conflict in the Middle East and, for oil, the risk of moving significantly higher from here has increased.'
Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack have both expressed support for slightly higher interest rates, arguing that inflation is not on a sustainable path towards the central bank's 2 per cent target. They are voting members at this week's policy meeting and could oppose a decision to leave interest rates unchanged.
