Fed Officials Eye Higher Rates Amid Rising Inflation
A recent meeting of the Federal Reserve Board showed that many officials believe higher interest rates will be necessary if inflation continues to rise.
The minutes from the July 28-29 meeting, released on Wednesday, indicated that several policymakers think the Fed's key short-term rate may need to increase in the coming months. However, it is unclear how many of the 19 officials support this view, as only 12 have a vote on the outcome.
The current interest rate stands at around 3.6%, and inflation has shown some signs of cooling, though gas prices have rebounded this month due to renewed hostilities in the Middle East. Wall Street investors now expect the Fed to keep rates unchanged at its next meeting in September and potentially lift them in December.
