Fed Officials Eye Higher Rates as US Economy Grapples with Inflation

The US economy remains under scrutiny as inflation concerns continue to weigh on consumers and businesses. A recent snapshot of economic data shows that many Federal Reserve officials believe higher interest rates may be necessary if inflation doesn't subside.

Minutes from the Fed's July meeting revealed that several policymakers think a rate hike is likely, despite the current key short-term rate being around 3.6%. The decision to keep rates unchanged at the last meeting was made by a vote of 9-3. However, with inflation still high and gas prices rebounding due to renewed hostilities in the Middle East, investors now expect the Fed to remain on hold until its next meeting in September.

The average long-term US mortgage rate has eased for the second week in a row, but remains higher than this time last year. The benchmark 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rate fell to 6.65% from 6.67%, while the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage rate dropped to 5.95%. Despite these recent decreases, borrowing costs have been rising throughout the year, limiting homebuyers' purchasing power.

Fewer people applied for US unemployment benefits last week, with jobless claims dropping to 206,000 from a revised 212,000 the previous week. This decline is seen as another sign that layoffs remain low and most Americans enjoy job security.
