Federal Reserve officials have signaled openness to reducing the number of policy meetings, a proposal floated by new Chairman Kevin Warsh. At least a third of Fed officials have expressed interest in scaling back the frequency of meetings for the committee that sets interest rates.

Cleveland Fed president Beth Hammack and Philadelphia's Anna Paulson are among those who have expressed receptiveness to the idea of fewer meetings, along with Kansas City's Jeffrey Schmid. They want further analysis of potential trade-offs before making a decision.

The proposal would mark a significant shift in the way the US central bank operates, setting it apart from its major overseas counterparts like the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan.
