Fed Officials Push for Higher Interest Rates Amid Stubborn Inflation

Two Federal Reserve officials dissented from the central bank's decision to hold interest rates steady this week, arguing that higher rates are needed to combat stubbornly high inflation.

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari stated their concerns about inflation, which has remained above 2% for more than five years. Hammack said she preferred to raise rates at the recent meeting because she didn't see the current policy stance as restrictive enough.

Kashkari expressed concern that high inflation could become entrenched and advocated for a series of small rate hikes to manage this risk. He noted that if inflation cools, the Fed can slow or pause rate hikes without unnecessary impact on the real economy.
