Fed Officials Push for Higher Rates Amid Stubborn Inflation

The Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes revealed growing pressure among officials to raise interest rates to combat stubbornly high inflation. The Fed's benchmark interest rate has remained at 3.5%-3.75% since last month, despite a majority of members voting to keep it unchanged.

Inflation has persisted above the Fed's goal of a 2% annual rate for over five years, fueled by recent tariffs and the Iran war. 'Many participants assessed that policy tightening would likely be necessary if inflation did not decline,' according to the minutes.

Some officials commented that financial conditions may not currently be restrictive enough to facilitate a return to 2% inflation. The hawks on the committee are unlikely to gain support unless economic data shows inflation accelerating from its slow pace in June and July.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh proposed reducing the number of meetings per year from eight to six, which could lead to fewer headlines for the Fed's decisions. Any change to the schedule would take place after 2026, according to Warsh.
