Fed Officials Push for Rate Hike Amid Persistent Inflation
Three Federal Reserve officials dissented at this week's policy meeting in favor of an interest rate hike to combat persistent inflation. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan expressed concern about inflation remaining above the central bank's 2% target.
Hammack stated that inflation has remained stubbornly above 2% for more than five years and that a higher federal funds rate would help restrain economic activity and reduce inflationary pressures. She also noted that the economy can deal with higher interest rates given the stability of the job market.
Kashkari expressed concern about the risk that high inflation could become entrenched and advocated for tightening policy incrementally as more data on the path of inflation and employment becomes available. He warned that waiting too long to address inflation could lead to even bolder actions being necessary.
