Fed Officials See Higher Rates as Inflation Fears Persist
The Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes revealed that many officials believe higher interest rates may be necessary to combat persistently high inflation.
According to the minutes, Fed officials were concerned about the impact of tariffs, energy prices, and AI infrastructure investment on goods and services pricing.
While core inflation has cooled, with annual core inflation falling to 2.5% in July, the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index is running hotter at 3.3%, a much higher reading than the consumer price index.
New Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's lack of guidance on the Fed's next steps at his July 29 news conference also unnerved Wall Street investors, causing interest rates to rise.
