Fed Officials See Need for Further Rate Hikes Amid Elevated Inflation
The Federal Reserve Board released minutes from its July meeting, showing that many officials believe further rate hikes are necessary to combat elevated inflation. The FOMC meeting took place on July 28-29, and the minutes revealed that several participants expressed concerns about inflation running above the 2% target due to supply shocks, including rising energy prices tied to the Middle East conflict.
Some officials who supported a rate hike at the July meeting believed that early action would avoid the need for larger increases in the future. However, three committee members argued against a rate hike, and many participants expressed the view that additional hikes would be necessary if upward price pressures do not ease.
The minutes also disclosed that Chair Warsh proposed reducing the number of FOMC meetings per year from eight to six, which could streamline the monetary policy decision-making process. However, market participants are likely to focus on how a change in meeting frequency could affect policy management flexibility.
