Fed Officials Signal Caution Amid Mixed Inflation Readings
Boston Federal Reserve President Susan Collins described the latest US inflation reading as 'mixed', citing both positive and negative trends. The headline rate was stronger than expected, but certain factors that contributed to the increase are not necessarily driven by supply and demand conditions.
Collins noted that one of these factors is the rise in portfolio management fees, which is related to stock values rather than market fundamentals. Despite this, she believes inflation will likely fall on its own without further action from the Fed.
However, Collins emphasized her readiness to raise interest rates if necessary, indicating a cautious approach to monetary policy. Kansas City Federal Reserve President Jeffrey Schmid also expressed concerns about persistently high inflation, describing it as 'stubborn' and resistant to decline.
