Fed Officials Sound Alarm on Inflation as Interest Rates Remain Unchanged
Three Federal Reserve officials have expressed concern about inflation, stating that not raising interest rates was a mistake. The officials, Beth Hammack of Cleveland, Neel Kashkari of Minneapolis, and Lorie Logan of Dallas, dissented in favor of raising rates by a quarter point at the Fed's recent meeting.
The officials cited spiking energy costs as a major contributor to inflation pressures. They noted that higher fuel costs affect many parts of the economy, including shipping, airfares, and even gas prices for Americans getting to work.
According to Hammack, businesses are experiencing broad pricing pressures, and consumers are expressing despair over persistently higher prices. Logan suggested that the current level of borrowing costs is not keeping growth and inflation in check, stating that 'labor, consumption, and financial market conditions indicate that monetary policy is not restraining the economy.'
Kashkari also pointed to the influence of AI spending on inflation, saying 'massive investment in data centers has added a new demand element to the high inflation Americans are experiencing.'
