Fed Officials Urge Higher Interest Rates to Combat US Inflation

The US Federal Reserve is facing renewed concerns over inflation, as three of its officials have come out in support of raising interest rates to combat persistently high prices. In a departure from their colleagues, Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan argued that keeping interest rates unchanged at 3.5-3.75% was a mistake.

The three policymakers expressed concerns about the broadening of pricing pressures, with businesses describing them as persisting rather than fading. Consumers are also feeling the pinch, with many expressing despair over higher prices. Hammack noted that 'businesses describe pricing pressures as broadening rather than fading, and consumers are expressing despair over persistently higher prices.'

Logan warned that labor, consumption, and financial market conditions indicate that monetary policy is not restraining the economy, suggesting that interest rates may need to be increased to control inflation. Kashkari also pointed out that massive investment in data centers has added a new demand element to the high inflation Americans are experiencing.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index showed annual inflation eased to 3.7% in June from 4.1% in May, but it remains well above the Fed's 2% target. Logan emphasized that 'every month of above-target inflation compounds the strain on the budgets of American families and businesses.'

The Federal Reserve will continue to weigh inflation risks against labor market strength as it considers future interest rate decisions.
