Fed Officials Weigh Higher Rates Amid Persistent Inflation Concerns
Fed officials are considering raising interest rates if inflation persists at current levels.
The Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes showed that many policymakers think higher rates will be necessary to combat inflation, which has not subsided despite some recent signs of cooling.
Inflation concerns were a major focus of the Fed's discussion last month, with officials worried about the impact of tariffs, energy prices, and investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure on prices.
The minutes noted that 'many participants assessed that (higher rates) would likely be necessary if inflation did not decline,' and that core PCE prices are expected to have risen 3.3% in July from a year ago, higher than the CPI reading.
