Fed Policymakers Mull Rate Hikes Amid Persistent Inflation
Minutes from the US Federal Reserve's July meeting have revealed that many policymakers believe interest rate hikes may be necessary if inflation remains high. This comes after three members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted in favor of an immediate 25-basis-point hike, which was ultimately not implemented.
The minutes highlighted that 'many' Fed officials assessed that policy tightening would likely be necessary if inflation did not decline. The Fed has missed its two-percent inflation target for over five years, and US households have been affected by high prices.
Regional Fed presidents Beth Hammack, Lorie Logan, and Neel Kashkari were among those who favored raising interest rates immediately, citing broad-based price pressures and the need to meet the Fed's commitment to its dual mandate on inflation and maximum employment.
