Fed Rate Decision Sparks Uncertainty: Market Eyes 35% Hike Odds
Market attention is centered on an uncertain Federal Reserve rate decision as investors weigh whether Chair Kevin Warsh could deliver a surprise hike. According to CME Group data, Fed rate hike odds rose to 35% from 26% last week, signaling increasing market expectations of tighter policy.
Recent options activity in long-dated Treasuries and gold is offering fresh clues about how traders are positioning. In the iShares 20+ year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT), the ratio of put open interest to calls fell to 0.63 from 0.73 this month, even as TLT prices are falling and the 10-year Treasury yield is testing multi-year highs.
Zed Francis, co-founder and chief investment officer of Convexitas, says a rate hike would help signal Fed independence, leading to a twist in the yield curve and a rally at the long end. This could also support call options on the Nasdaq 100 because technology stocks are often treated as long-duration assets.
Gold is being watched for confirmation, as the metal generally performs poorly in higher interest-rate environments. Trading in SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) may provide an additional read on whether current Treasury positioning reflects growing conviction that Warsh is prepared to tighten policy.
