Fed Rate Hike Expectations Soar Following Warsh's Cautious Remarks
Market expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in September have risen significantly following comments from Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh.
In a speech at the Jackson Hole symposium, Warsh noted that inflation remains high and that the recent positive inflation data does not indicate a lasting improvement in underlying trends.
The probability of a 25 basis point rate hike at the September meeting has approached its highest levels in recent times, with CME Group's FedWatch tool showing investors have increased the probability of a rate hike to 55.7%.
Warsh emphasized that it is necessary for inflation to move clearly and quickly enough toward the level targeted by the central bank, adding 'Otherwise, we have more work to do. This is our duty, our authority, and our responsibility.'
