Fed Rate Hike Expected Despite Trump's Calls for Lower Rates
The Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee is set to meet on Monday, with market expectations indicating a 25-basis point rate hike. However, this decision would put them at odds with President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called for lower interest rates.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, handpicked by Trump, finds himself in an awkward position due to his own decisions and Trump's influence on the economy. The war in the Middle East, which Trump initiated, has driven oil prices above $US106 a barrel, causing gasoline and diesel prices to surge.
Last week's inflation data showed a 40-basis point increase in headline inflation to 3.4%, with the rate above the Fed's 2% target for five and a half years. Warsh's own statements at the Jackson Hole conference have set him up for a potential conflict, as he emphasized the importance of meeting the 2% inflation target.
