Fed Rate Hike Uncertainty Fuels Carry Trade Stability
FX volatility has been falling in mid-August as investors appear comfortable with the Federal Reserve's stance on interest rates. According to ING's Chris Turner, the market is pricing a 50% chance of a 25bp hike in September, and this uncertainty is having a limited impact on carry trades.
Carry trades involve borrowing money at low interest rates in one currency and investing it in another with higher returns. Despite the upcoming US CPI release, Turner believes that it will not significantly affect the current market dynamics.
However, there are some concerns about the bond market, particularly in the tech sector. Nvidia has announced plans to partner with six investment houses to arrange $500bn of debt financing for its customers, which could lead to a sell-off in the bond market and potentially disrupt the benign environment.
