Fed Rate Hike Uncertainty Lingers Ahead of Key Jobs and Inflation Data
The Federal Reserve is facing a close call on whether to further tighten monetary policy. Commerzbank's Dr. Christoph Balz expects the Fed to keep rates unchanged, but notes a significant risk of another 25 basis point hike. The main reason for this uncertainty is the upcoming release of jobs and Consumer Price Index (CPI) data.
The latest CPI figures are expected to show a significant increase of 0.4% from July, driven by rising gasoline prices. This could lead Fed officials to argue that inflation is still slowing down and refrain from raising interest rates. However, several Fed officials have expressed concerns about the potential impact of entrenched inflation expectations on wage and price negotiations.
Dr. Balz notes that while a single monthly figure should not be decisive, there is a significant risk that things could turn out differently if the figures surprise on the upside. In this case, a 25-basis-point hike would likely be in order.
