Fed Rate Policy Holds Key to Bitcoin's $80K Breakout
The Federal Reserve's interest-rate policy is seen as a crucial factor in determining whether Bitcoin can break above $80,000. Analysts believe that investors are trading based on their expectations of rate hikes or holds, leading to sharp reversals in fund flows into crypto investment products.
According to James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, the odds of a September rate increase rose after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said progress on inflation had been limited. This led to $100 million flowing out of digital-asset investment products. However, after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller cited signs of disinflation and suggested holding rates steady in September if inflation cools further, inflows reached $1 billion through Sept. 4.
The market is currently pricing in about a 60% chance of a rate increase at the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting. Liquidity conditions are also seen as a key variable for Bitcoin's direction. The U.S. Treasury's decision to raise the size of some long-term Treasury buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation has been cited as a factor in Bitcoin's recent climb above $80,000.
