Fed Reassesses Inflation Measures Amid Investor Concerns
The US Federal Reserve's approach to measuring inflation has been under scrutiny since Kevin Warsh took over as chair. The Fed's preferred measure, the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, has been above its 2% target for five years.
However, some of this excess is attributed to higher energy prices and tariffs, which are not expected to persist indefinitely. Oil prices cannot continue to rise forever, and even the futures market suggests that prices will eventually normalize.
The Treasury Department's efforts to improve liquidity in the government debt market have raised concerns about broader policy implications. The breakeven rate, a market-based measure of inflation expectations, has increased, indicating that investors are pricing in higher inflation ahead.
