Fed Seeks to Rebuild Credibility with Sweeping Review
Kevin Warsh, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, has initiated a comprehensive review of the central bank's operations and analytical foundations to address persistent inflation. The review comes in response to years of above-target inflation, which has eroded the Fed's credibility.
The review will focus on five key areas: the inflation framework, data quality and sourcing, productivity and employment measurement, communications strategy, and balance sheet policy. Warsh emphasized that the 2% target is not up for revision, indicating a commitment to maintaining the nominal anchor.
One of the most significant critiques in Warsh's announcement concerns the degradation of survey-based data, which has made models built on this data less reliable. The task force focused on data will explore alternative sources and consider replacing or supplementing existing architecture.
