Fed Set to Hike Rates Amid Strong Inflation Data
The Federal Reserve is set to meet next week amidst high expectations of a rate hike. The recent inflation data, which showed a 0.4% increase in headline inflation from July and a 3.4% rise over the past year, has strengthened the case for tighter monetary policy.
The core CPI measure rose 0.3% during the month, faster than expected, while the more closely watched supercore measure, which excludes energy and housing services, increased by 0.5%. These figures have increased expectations of a rate hike to around 85-90% in federal funds futures.
New Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will face a major test as he attempts to build consensus among policymakers and provide investors with a clear explanation for the decision. The inflation data has made it more difficult for Warsh to maintain his flexibility, and a rate hike next week could help establish a clearer policy direction.
