Fed Set to Raise Rates Amid Inflation Concerns, Testing Warsh Against Trump

The Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates by a quarter point on Wednesday, September 16, marking its first hike since July 2023. This decision would put Chair Kevin Warsh at odds with President Donald Trump, who has been pushing for rate cuts.

Inflation has consistently exceeded the Fed's target of 2 percent over the past five years, and recent data show that it remains high. The headline personal consumption expenditures (PCE) inflation rate reached 3.7 percent year-over-year in July, while core PCE inflation stood at 3.3 percent.

Warsh has been a strong advocate for maintaining low inflation and has signaled his willingness to take action to achieve this goal. His language at the Jackson Hole symposium on August 28 helped shift market expectations from no hike before December to a rate increase within weeks, with CME FedWatch odds jumping to 66.1 percent.

Not everyone agrees that the data justify a rate hike, however. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent argued that policymakers traditionally do not raise interest rates during supply shocks absent second- or third-order effects. Bank of America economists warn that a hold after Warsh's Jackson Hole language could undermine credibility gained in a single speech.

The stakes are high, as the Fed's decision will not only affect monetary policy but also test whether Warsh's confirmation was influenced by politics. The outcome remains contested rather than preordained, with retail sales data to be released on the day of the decision.
