Fed Silence Sparks Market Volatility Fears

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's decision to move away from forward guidance is causing concerns among financial experts, including Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics.

Zandi warned that the Fed's increasingly opaque policy could trigger a 'serious market sell-off' and put the broader economy at risk. He stated that the central bank's unwillingness to signal how it would respond to changing economic conditions is leaving investors with little basis for assessing future decisions.

Warsh has made it clear since taking over as Fed chair that he wants to reduce the central bank's reliance on forward guidance, simplifying the policy statement and dropping forward guidance altogether. This marks a departure from recent practice, when Fed officials routinely offered markets clues about the likely direction of interest rates through policy statements, economic projections, and press conferences.

Zandi believes this new approach could make nearly every Fed meeting a 'live' event, with investors unable to anticipate policy decisions before they are announced. This increased uncertainty could lead to more volatility in bond and stock markets.
