Fed Survey Reveals Flat Numbers on Financial Stability
The Federal Reserve's annual survey of household economics and decisionmaking has yielded some steady numbers, but they tell a more complicated story about financial stability in the US.
The survey asks how households would cover an unexpected expense of $400. The latest results show that 63% of adults can handle this without borrowing, essentially unchanged from previous years.
This plateau suggests that extra money saved during the pandemic has not become a permanent cushion for typical households, even as the economy grew.
About 4 in 10 adults say they could cover $5,000 or more immediately. At the other end, about 1 in 6 said they could not handle even $100 without borrowing or selling something.
The survey also tracks retirement savings, with about 6 in 10 working-age households saying they have something set aside for retirement, usually in an employer-sponsored account.
