Fed Warns Wall Street to Expect Tighter Inflation Policy
The Federal Reserve has issued a warning to Wall Street that it will maintain its 2% inflation target, sparking concerns among investors. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh stated in a recent press conference that 'there is no soft target' and emphasized the importance of achieving this goal.
In contrast to the more flexible approach adopted by Jerome Powell's committee in 2020, Warsh has indicated a shift towards a firmer stance on inflation targeting. The current inflation rate stands at 3.7%, well above the Fed's target, with the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE) showing a slight decline from May to June.
Investors are closely watching this week's PCE data release for any signs of progress towards the 2% target. If the numbers do not show significant improvement, it is likely that the Fed will raise interest rates by a quarter percentage point at its September meeting, as suggested by three officials who dissented from the previous statement.
