Fed Weighs Interest Rate Hike Amid Stubborn Inflation
The Federal Reserve is set to make a critical decision on interest rates as policymakers weigh the impact of stubborn inflation. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh has stated that his committee has no tolerance for persistently elevated inflation and is committed to restoring price stability.
In June, the rate-setting committee signaled their next move would likely be an increase in interest rates, which tend to have a drag on the job market. However, with inflation cooling slightly last month, policymakers may feel they have some breathing room to hold rates steady for now.
The Fed is also considering the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the economy, which Warsh believes will eventually make workers more productive but could have a disruptive effect in the short term. The central bank has established task forces led by economists and business people from outside the Fed to advise them on AI's effects.
