Federal Reserve Decision on Interest Rates Set for Wednesday
The Federal Reserve will announce its decision on interest rates today, and experts predict that it will likely keep them unchanged. The current benchmark rate is 3.5% to 3.75%, which affects what consumers pay in interest for credit cards, car loans, and other financial products.
Recent inflation trends have been a major concern for the Federal Reserve, but June saw a slight decrease from nearly half a percent to 3.5%. This decline was largely due to falling gas prices compared to previous months. However, recent escalations in Iran strikes have caused prices to rise again.
Average gas prices bottomed out at $3.79 in early July and rose to $4.10 by Tuesday, according to AAA data. The Federal Reserve's goal is to reduce inflation to 2%, but Kevin Warsh, the head of the central bank, has not detailed how this will be achieved.
President Trump is applying pressure on Warsh to lower interest rates, despite the Federal Reserve's independence from political influence. 'He wants to do the right thing,' Trump said. 'I know what he wants to do. But you need the consent of some people that have perhaps bad intentions.' Republicans are also concerned about affordability as the midterm elections approach.
