Federal Reserve Entangled in Efforts to Support Embattled Yen
The Federal Reserve may soon be involved in efforts to support Japan's embattled yen, as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent requests an expansion of a lending facility. This would enable Japan to raise dollars without selling Treasurys outright, which could otherwise push yields higher and add pressure to U.S. borrowing costs.
Bessent wants the Fed's FIMA Repo Facility expanded so that Japan can access dollars through this channel rather than selling Treasurys. However, this would require buy-in from the Federal Reserve, testing Chairman Kevin Warsh's efforts to redefine Treasury-Fed cooperation.
