Federal Reserve Holds Interest Rate Steady Amid High Inflation Concerns
The Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate steady at 3.5-3.75% despite pressure to combat high inflation, which has reached a 4.2% annual rate in May, its highest level in over three years.
Central bank policymakers voted 9-3 to leave the short-term borrowing rate unchanged, with three regional Fed bank presidents dissenting from the decision and preferring to raise rates by a quarter percentage point.
The move was led by Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, who emphasized that the central bank has no tolerance for persistently elevated inflation.
'Inflation remains elevated relative to the Committee's 2% goal, in part reflecting supply shocks that have driven price increases in certain sectors, including energy,' policymakers said in a statement.
