Federal Reserve Keeps Interest Rates Steady Amid Inflation Concerns
The US Federal Reserve has kept benchmark interest rates steady at 3.5 to 3.75 percent, despite inflation threats. The decision on July 30 was met with a decline in stock markets, with the Dow Jones falling 1,153 points, or 2.19 percent, and the NASDAQ down 433 points, or 1.74 percent.
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) was split, with nine members voting to keep the rate unchanged, while three, including Neel Kashkari of Minneapolis Federal Reserve, pressed for a quarter-point rate hike. FOMC Chairman Kevin Warsh called this dissent a 'good family fight' over how to tame inflation while keeping the economy steady and job market growing.
Warsh's decision disappointed President Donald Trump, who had handpicked him to lead the Fed. Trump defended Warsh, saying he was doing a 'fantastic job,' but acknowledged that he would love to see lower interest rates.
