Federal Reserve Meets Amid Rising Debt Concerns

The Federal Reserve's annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming is set to take place this weekend. Kevin Warsh will be speaking on Friday and addressing key issues, including inflation targeting. Historically, the Fed has used these meetings to announce major policy changes, but Warsh has emphasized the importance of downplaying misleading information and not over-interpreting post-meeting communications.

Warsh believes that inflation will eventually return to the Fed's target of 2%, despite not having reached it in over five years. He has also expressed concerns about the Treasury's plan to buy back long-dated Treasury bonds, which could potentially clash with a rate hike by the Fed.

The U.S. federal debt recently surpassed $40 trillion, prompting some to suggest that it's time for the government to reevaluate its approach to borrowing. Paul Vigna, writing in the New York Times, has proposed the idea of an 'amargi', a blanket declaration of public debt cancellation, inspired by ancient Mesopotamian practices.
