Fed's AI Task Force Lacks Labor Representation, Democrats Say
Senate Banking Committee Democrats are pushing for labor representation on the Federal Reserve's AI task force, citing concerns about potential conflicts of interest among its members. The lawmakers argue that the task force, which includes venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and Microsoft executive Asha Sharma, lacks diverse viewpoints.
The Democrats sent a letter to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh last week, urging him to add individuals with no financial ties to the AI industry and who represent the perspective of workers to the task force. They argue that this would ensure more accurate assessments of AI's impact on the labor market.
The lawmakers also took issue with Warsh's response during a hearing, in which he said the task force members were among the 'smartest people' he knew and their input would be used as recommendations rather than policy directives. The Democrats argue that this undermines the Fed's dual mandate to achieve maximum employment and stable prices.
