Fed's Opaque Communication Style Sparks Concern from Top Economist
Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, has expressed concern over the Federal Reserve's new communication style under Chairman Kevin Warsh. According to Zandi, the Fed's reluctance to provide forward guidance or clarity on their reaction function is a 'serious mistake' that could compromise markets and the broader economy.
Zandi warned that if the Fed continues down this path, future meetings could trigger market sell-offs and put the economy at risk. He pointed out that investors will be left guessing about Fed decisions, leading to increased volatility in bond and stock markets.
During his tenure as leader of the central bank, Alan Greenspan's communication was often vague, but even he provided more guidance than Warsh is offering now, Zandi noted. The economist emphasized that the risk isn't just about fewer market signals, but also the possibility of 'live' meetings where investors react to decisions in real-time rather than pricing them in beforehand.
