Food Price Surge to Drive Inflation in 2027: ECB Economist Warns
European Central Bank chief economist Philip Lane predicts that rising food prices will be one of the main drivers of inflation in 2027. Lane, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, noted that while current food price increases are relatively low across Europe, they will have a significant impact on overall inflation.
According to Lane, energy prices, including oil and gas, will play a crucial role in determining the level of inflation. He stated that if there is an 'open-ended war' in the Middle East with no resolution, it could change the 'fairly benign' impact on the world economy.
Lane emphasized that the ECB's target inflation rate is 2%, but current rates are hovering at 3%. He acknowledged that this is above the target and will require careful consideration of interest rate decisions to balance the harm caused by higher interest rates against the effect of higher inflation.
