Food Prices Tipped as Key Driver of Inflation in 2027
European Central Bank (ECB) Chief Economist Philip Lane forecasts that food prices will be the main driver of inflation in 2027. Currently, food inflation across Europe is relatively low but is expected to rise.
Lane attributes this projected increase to past weather events and their predictably negative impact on food production, citing El Nino as an example. He notes that commodity prices for wheat, maize, and rice have already increased in recent months.
The rising price of oil, now exceeding $90 per barrel of Brent crude, is also a factor contributing to inflationary pressures. Lane warns that the situation remains uncertain but expects inflation to hover around 3% for the remainder of the year.
