Ford Blasts Trump's Tariffs: 'Devastating' for Both Countries
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed strong opposition to President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada, calling them 'the worst thing you could do for the American economy.' In a recent interview with ABC News' Martha Raddatz, Ford stated that trade talks between the two countries have fallen apart, leading to retaliatory tariffs from both sides.
The U.S. has imposed 50% tariffs on many Canadian goods, while Canada has added tariffs on U.S. goods starting September 8th. The long-standing trade relationship between the two nations is under strain, with over 70% of total exports in Canada going to the U.S. and nearly 60% of imports coming from there.
Ford criticized Trump's decision, saying it would be 'devastating' for both countries if auto tariffs were doubled. He noted that Canada is the largest purchaser of vehicles in the world from the U.S., and doubling the tariffs would have severe consequences.
