Ford Slams Trump's Tariffs: Devastating for Both Countries
Ontario Premier Doug Ford is speaking out against President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada, calling them 'devastating' for both countries. In an interview with ABC News, Ford expressed his opposition to the tariffs, saying they would harm the American economy.
The trade war between the US and Canada has been ongoing since September 8, when Canada responded to Trump's announcement of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods by adding retaliatory tariffs on many US goods. The US is Canada's largest trading partner, with over 70% of total exports going to the US.
Ford also addressed a recent deal between the US and Venezuela, in which the US took a majority stake in Venezuelan oil reserves. He questioned whether this deal gives Trump leverage in trade talks with Canada.
When asked about the impact of doubling auto tariffs on Canada, Ford said it would be 'devastating' for both countries, and that it would harm the American people as well. He also criticized Trump's decision to rename Lake Ontario to 'Lake America', calling it a 'disappointing' move.
