Foreign Buyers Flood US Treasury's $9 Billion TIPS Auction
The US Treasury's auction of $9 billion worth of 30-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) saw exceptional demand from foreign investors. The auction stopped at a high yield of 2.973%, which is lower than the 2.991% when-issued (WI) yield trading in the market at the time.
The bid-to-cover ratio was robust, with investors submitting nearly three times as many bids as the amount of securities offered. This indicates that investors were willing to accept a lower yield to secure the bonds.
Foreign investors dominated the auction, taking down 84.4% of the offering. Direct bidders, primarily domestic institutional investors, purchased 13.4%, while primary dealers were left with just 2.1%. The solid auction suggests that there is strong demand for US inflation-linked securities from international buyers.
