Forint Gains Ahead, But Long-Term Pressures Loom
Commerzbank analysts are predicting a temporary reprieve for the Hungarian Forint (HUF) against the euro in the near term. The bank's assessment points to a window of relative stability for the currency, but structural challenges may limit sustained appreciation.
The improvement in external sentiment and expectations that the National Bank of Hungary (MNB) will maintain a cautious approach to monetary easing have provided some support for the Forint recently. Additionally, Hungary's current account position and EU fund inflows have acted as a buffer, although these factors are not expected to offset deeper vulnerabilities.
However, despite the positive short-term signals, Commerzbank warns that the Forint's gains are likely to be capped. Persistent inflation, fiscal concerns, and the MNB's limited room for rate cuts could weigh on the currency in the medium term. The bank also points to external risks, including potential shifts in European energy prices and global monetary policy, which could reignite depreciation pressures.
