Fortescue Dividend Forecast Clouded by Commodity Price Volatility
Fortescue's dividend forecast for FY30 is uncertain due to several factors, including the mechanical relationship between earnings volatility and fixed payout ratios. For investors focusing on income, understanding how the dividend moves is crucial, especially when commodity prices fluctuate.
The company declared a fully franked final dividend of A$0.46 per share in FY26, bringing the full-year payment to A$1.08 per share. However, this represents only a modest 2% decline from FY25's annual payment, with the final dividend falling approximately 23% compared to FY25.
The underlying earnings per share actually grew by around 3% in FY26 due to a 7% increase in realised iron ore prices, but declined by 2% in Australian dollar terms because of AUD appreciation. This currency translation effect is often underappreciated by retail investors.
One of the most significant threats to seaborne iron ore prices comes from West Africa, particularly the Simandou deposit in Guinea, which has exceptionally high-grade ore that can command a premium in the market. As Simandou progressively ramps up shipments, it will add meaningful new supply to the market, potentially leading to an iron ore surplus and downward pressure on prices.
The iron ore price outlook is further complicated by continued output discipline from major Australian producers and Brazilian production recovery from Vale following operational disruptions. Chinese steel demand is also facing structural headwinds due to the country's property sector deleveraging cycle.
