France's Private Sector Activity Slumps to Two-Month Low in August

France's private sector activity has contracted for the second consecutive month, according to data released in August. The HCOB Composite PMI fell to 48.8, below the forecasted 49.5, indicating a deepening contraction.

The Composite PMI combines services and manufacturing activity and is a key indicator of private sector health. A reading below 50 signals a contraction, and this decline from July's 49.1 to 48.8 suggests that the slowdown is gaining momentum.

The services sector, previously a pillar of resilience, appears to be losing steam, while manufacturing continues to struggle with weak demand and high energy costs. Economists had expected a modest improvement, but the actual data came in worse, reflecting persistent headwinds such as high interest rates, subdued global trade, and political uncertainty.

The weaker-than-expected PMI reinforces expectations that the European Central Bank may need to consider further policy support. Financial markets are likely to react by adjusting bets on future rate cuts, which could influence the euro's value and government bond yields.
