Francisco Partners Acquires Moneris in $2 Billion Deal
Moneris, Canada's largest payment processor, is changing hands in a major deal. Francisco Partners, a global technology-focused private equity firm, has agreed to acquire Moneris from Bank of Montreal and Royal Bank of Canada for approximately $2 billion.
The transaction will see Francisco Partners purchase each bank's 50% stake in the Toronto-headquartered company, marking a significant ownership shift for Moneris. The deal is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of BMO and RBC's 2027 fiscal year, pending regulatory approvals under the Retail Payment Activities Act and Canada's Competition Act.
Moneris has been a cornerstone of Canadian financial infrastructure for over 25 years, processing one in three transactions across the country at more than 325,000 points of commerce. The company employs approximately 2,000 people at offices in several cities.
