French Inflation Surges, Threatening ECB Rate Cut Plans
France's July inflation reading exceeded expectations, with a 0.6% month-over-month increase in the country's consumer price index (CPI), measured on the EU-harmonised basis.
This marks a notable pickup from the previous month's 0.1% increase, driven primarily by higher costs in services and energy.
On an annual basis, the EU-harmonised CPI rose 2.7% in July, up from 2.5% in June, indicating that inflation is running above the European Central Bank's 2% target.
The stronger-than-expected inflation print complicates the ECB's monetary policy path, with some analysts suggesting that it may prompt a more cautious approach and potentially delay interest rate cuts.
