Frontier AI Sparks Global Financial Stability Concerns
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has warned that advanced artificial intelligence models pose a significant threat to global financial stability. In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey highlighted the potential impact of so-called 'frontier AI' on cyber risk.
The emergence of frontier AI models is showing increasingly sophisticated autonomy and problem-solving abilities, as well as threat capabilities, according to Bailey.
He identified cyber risk as the most immediate concern for the financial system, citing the potential for frontier AI to alter the speed, scale, and economics of cyber risk.
Recent incidents involving flagship models tested by Anthropic and OpenAI have highlighted the need for improved vulnerability management, response, and recovery capabilities in the financial sector.
