The Financial Stability Board (FSB) has sounded the alarm over the risks posed by frontier AI models in the cyber-threat environment. Chaired by Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, the FSB is an advisory body that monitors potential risks to global markets.

In a letter dated August 28 to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey warned that AI is complicating an already volatile risk landscape, shaken by conflict in the Middle East and its impact on inflation. He noted that frontier AI may have the ability to materially alter the speed, scale, and economics of cyber risk.

The FSB urged financial services firms and authorities to prepare for a new threat environment characterized by more vulnerabilities, faster patching, and potentially new 'operational and resilience challenges'. Bailey emphasized the importance of ensuring that advances in AI capability are matched by resilience and preparedness.
