FSB Warns G20 About Frontier AI Threat to Global Financial Stability
The Financial Stability Board (FSB) has issued a warning to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors about the threat of frontier AI models in the financial system. According to Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, these models have become the most immediate concern for global financial stability.
Frontier AI refers to advanced artificial intelligence models that can alter the speed, scale, and economics of cyber risk. They can compromise software vulnerabilities at a much faster rate than human teams, making them a potent threat to the global financial system.
The FSB's concern is not just about the potential for these models to be used maliciously, but also about their ability to disrupt the entire network of interconnected entities that make up the global financial system. As Bailey noted, 'cyber disruption can spread across jurisdictions through common technology providers, shared infrastructure, and cross-border financial activity.'
The FSB is calling on financial institutions, financial market infrastructures, and technology providers to prepare for more severe scenarios involving simultaneous disruption across multiple firms or shared technology dependencies.
