FTSE 100 Edges Lower Amid Strong Pound and Flat Oil Prices
The FTSE 100 dipped to 10,897.27 in London on Thursday, July 30, 2026, after a marginal decline of 0.10%, or 11.14 points. The index had been trading near its all-time highs despite the modest pullback, having climbed nearly 10% year-to-date through late July.
The session's intraday range extended from a low of 10,865.37 to a high of 10,979.60, with the index opening at 10,907.37 before drifting gradually lower into the close. Thursday's high of 10,979.60 also stands as the index's 52-week peak.
The FTSE 100's performance was influenced by various factors, including oil prices and currency crosscurrents. Crude oil prices were essentially flat to modestly lower on Thursday, with WTI crude trading near $83.93 a barrel and Brent around $87.18. The pound's strength against the dollar also weighed on the index.
The Bank of England's interest rate decision was another significant factor in the day's trading. Despite persistent inflation pressure in the UK, the central bank left its benchmark rate unchanged, which added to the headwind facing the FTSE 100's exporter-heavy constituent base.
