FTSE 100 Slips as Hormuz Tensions Lift Oil Prices
The FTSE 100 index fell by 0.26% on Wednesday as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz lifted oil prices to more than one-month highs, according to MT Newswires.
Markets are treating this as an energy-supply shock rather than a geopolitical issue first and foremost. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global crude shipments, so even the risk of disruption can push oil prices up quickly.
This has implications for inflation and interest rates. Higher oil prices can seep into everyday costs like fuel and shipping, lifting near-term inflation and making investors less confident that the Bank of England will cut interest rates soon.
Despite this, some companies performed well on Wednesday. Cairn Homes rose after strong first-half results and a buyback, while Halma gained on an acquisition. BP also edged up after making its interim chair permanent.
